Does anyone here speak Latin? I'm in high school and I take Spanish now, but I really want to learn latin and, with Spanish (which I still want to continue) there's just no room for both Spanish and Latin in my schedule. Does anyone know where I can find, online, an easy and free tutorial or something that would teach me the basics of Latin?
I used to do latine at school in Cyprus but i can't see the point. Nobody speaks latin. They only use it for things like sientific names of birds for example common swift apus apus, house sparros passer domesticus.
For people who study languages it might be good because languages like English, French, Spanish have influences by Latin and maybe they use it in Italian cherches but appart from that i can't see where else it could be used. But i like the sound of it.
The first text we had in our book was saying: Ovidius poaeta in terra pontica exulat. Epistulas Romam scriptitat.
Nikos
I used to take Latin in school also, in 10th, 11th and 12th grade. I don't remember a lot of it though, although I still have the workbooks we used for it. But it was interesting anyway. Nicos is right, that hardly anyone really uses it, except for in some languages, in science, in law, and in the Catholic church sometimes, but it is useful for understanding terms in these fields. I don't know of any online programs that can help with practicing Latin, but I do have a program called 101 Languages of the World, and I think it includes Latin, but I'll have to check to see for sure if I'm right on this. The only thing I manage to save though when I'm checking out a language is the text of the language, but maybe I can PM you a list of the words and phrases and try to find the English terms for them.
i have been studying latin for 4 years at school, but i'm tired cause i had to study it too much, and now i would like to send the teacher and the fuckin books to hell!
